What is Protein Treatment for Hair?

Let’s clarify what a protein treatment actually is. To put it simply, our hair is protein. A protein called keratin makes up the majority of a hair strand, keeping it healthy, strong and full of elasticity.

But with damage caused by styling and maintenance, pollution, coloring and other things that don’t do your hair much good, the keratin starts to break down.

Certain lifestyle and diet choices can also lead to general keratin-deficiency in your body. Because maintaining a balanced, protein-rich diet is essential for healthy hair growth (some even claim that certain protein-rich foods can make your hair grow faster!), not consuming enough protein can contribute to hair loss.

The combination of poor diet and damage caused by styling causes your hair strands to break, making your hair look and feel unhappy. That’s when you may need a helping hand from a hair protein treatment.

A protein treatment for hair is a product loaded with a protein that hair can easily absorb, and it works to strengthen and repair the keratin.

What Is Botox for Hair?

When you think of wrinkles, you may think of onabotulinumtoxin A (Botox), a common prescription medication that some people use to smooth wrinkles. But what about Botox for your hair?

Hair on your head loses fullness and elasticity as it ages, just like your skin. New hair products market themselves as Botox for hair because they’re supposed to help fill the hair, make it smooth, and reduce frizz.

What is a Keratin Treatment?

Keratin treatments are used to tame frizzy hair. A keratin treatment will not straighten your hair, but it will smooth it, adding shine and manageability.

During a keratin treatment, your stylist will use a mixture of strong chemicals to apply a coat of protein (keratin) to your hair. This process seals your hair’s cuticle (protective outer layer), to prevent the movement of moisture in and out of your strands. Your stylist will rough-dry your hair, then finish it off using a flat-iron, to seal and activate the coating.

The treatment usually takes about 1-3 hours, and lasts about 3 months. (A keratin treatment is different from hair relaxing, or chemical straightening, which lasts until your hair grows out.)

Keratin treatments can be very effective if you have coarse or unruly strands. However, as with any treatment involving strong chemicals and high heats, there are risks involved to your hair.
